Dear guests,

It is my honor to introduce Mr. Robert Davidson, our panelist for the upcoming TUF Salon Series 100607-"Visual Arts & Film"

When I first met Bob at the kickoff party for collegelaunch.net, a mentoring service company, he was introduced as "Harvard classmate of George Bush Jr.". While I was impressed by this great "title", I quickly realized that even George's colleague doesn't have to be a politician.

In fact, Bob is a modern renaissance man who has big visions in arts and creative business. Bob impressed me not only with his rich portfolios of hospital building holdings but also his strategic advisory works for TV channels. His passion for Arts & Culture lies especially in the area of short films. I have great respect for his generosity and promptitude to share his advice and mentoring skills to students in arts and business field. Please join me to thank his valuable service to the Taiwanese American Community by participating in the panel, when you meet him in person at the TUF Salon on 10/06/07.

Based on my personal experience, I strongly believe that parents and students considering art related profession would especially benefit from his knowledge and experience that he will be sharing with us at the TUF Salon. Don't miss this opportunity to meet a man of this caliber.

If you have not RSVP, please do so at your earliest convenience.

TUF Salon is coming up next Saturday. Please RSVP as soon as possible if you haven’t done so. Below is an introduction of our panelist, Mr. Warren Fu written by Jim Liaw who will moderate this event.

It is my honor and my turn to introduce another one of our panelist for the upcoming TUF Salon Series 100607-“Visual Arts & Film”, Warren Fu.

Warren has been a long time friend of mine, dating all the way back to 1984 when we first met. I will forego any stories of drawing airplanes together or our hip hop dance routines, but instead focus on his God given creative talents.

Warren was born in the small village of Chicago, Illinois. Upon migrating to Southern California during his youth, he was exposed to a steady diet of Star Wars films, Spiderman comics, military air shows, and Norman Rockwell paintings. He translated these interests onto paper, as drawing was a popular sport amongst many nerds during the 80's. He later graduated from paper to walls, becoming heavily inspired by the LA graffiti art scene during his high school years.
Little did he know, these hobbies would prove to be the foundation for his career.

He eventually left the Southern California sun after being accepted into UC Berkeley. Unsure of how to channel his talents into a profession, he studied business and economics, while maintaining his love for the arts during his spare time. It was during his final semester that he heard about an internship at George Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic. He applied for the position with an unpolished portfolio of artwork, and somehow managed to get his foot in the door.

It was at Lucasfilm where he discovered that drawing spaceships and creatures was more appealing to him than drawing supply and demand graphs. Eventually, he went on to become an art director at the company, working on A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the three Star Wars movies that people didn't like.
His most notable contribution the galaxy far, far away was the initial design of General Grievous.

In early 2001, he was hired to design the cover for the late recording artist Aaliyah's self-titled album. After seeing an illustration he had done for the limited edition cover, the singer asked him to create an animated commercial to promote her album during the 2001 MTV Movie Awards. It was on this project that his interest in directing was sparked.

In recent years he moved back to Los Angeles. In 2006, he wrote and directed his first short, Bro'mosapien, a mock-nature-documentary on the various breeds of human subcultures, starring Star Wars' Anthony Daniels (C3PO). Hungry to work on another directing gig, he conceived a music video concept for the The Strokes You Only Live Once and pitched it to the band with a storyboard animatic. The video was recently completed in early 2007.

Warren is a great example of persistence, inspiration and passion. Without formal training from institutions like Art Center or Otis, Warren was still able to fuel his passion for the Arts. He never stopped creating. And he was persistent enough to break into the creative arts field. What fuels your passions? How can you support others and theirs? Come October 6th and let us have a great dialogue about it.

Karen,

I have been hearing very positive feedback about Visual Arts and Film TUF Salon. Thank you for your excellent presentation.

I wanted you to elaborate your future feature film project but time was too limited.

Your story-- A Taiwanese American widower returns to his homeland trying to find a wife and find himself needs to re-adopt to the culture of his childhood.. It sounds a very interesting plot with great potential for tears and laughter.

The short stories published in Taiwanese Writing Forum (Tai-bun Thong-sin) by Tan-lui, in my limited knowledge of your project, may share similar theme with yours; except the main character in his stories was not trying to find a wife, but his childhood memories, and his old friends and family whom he loves but lost contact for 30 years.

Tan Lui is a Taiwanese Canadian poet and story writer. You may not have heard of his name, but you probably have heard of Siao Thai-jian's "Eng-oan e kou-hiong (Eternal homeland), the lyric was written by Tan Lui.

After 30 year of exiles due to KMT's Black Name List, Tan Lui returns to Taiwan in mid 90.

From a series of short stories written in mid 90, readers can sense his culture shocks, excitement, frustration and love for Taiwan. The main character is three dimensional and the story is humorously sarcastic.

The stories were written in Holo Taiwanese.

Let's get together sometime. May be I can invite a couple families who might have interests in investing in Taiwanese speaking indi film. I will be happy to share these stories with you.
